OUR Story
Gadigal Information Service (GIS) is a First Nations owned and operated community media and arts hub based in Redfern, New South Wales, Australia. Proudly home to Koori Radio, Sydney's only Aboriginal radio station, GIS has been amplifying First Nations voices, stories, music and culture for more than three decades.
Established in 1993 as an Aboriginal Corporation, Gadigal Information Service was founded to create an independent platform where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples could tell their own stories, strengthen community connections, and celebrate the richness of First Nations cultures through media, music and the arts.
Our name honours the Gadigal People, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we operate. The Gadigal Country surrounding Sydney Harbour was the site of First Contact and the beginning of colonisation in Australia—an event that had devastating and lasting impacts on Aboriginal communities across the continent. We acknowledge the enduring strength, resilience and cultural authority of the Gadigal People and all First Nations peoples.
For more than 30 years, GIS has played a significant role in Australia's cultural landscape by nurturing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creativity, leadership and storytelling. Through broadcasting, live events, music production and youth engagement, we continue to provide opportunities for emerging and established First Nations artists to connect with audiences locally and nationally.
Our flagship initiatives include:
Koori Radio – Sydney's only Aboriginal radio station, broadcasting First Nations music, news, culture and community voices.
Yabun Festival – Australia's largest one-day Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander festival, celebrating survival, culture and community each year on 26 January.
Klub Koori – A vibrant live music and performance program showcasing First Nations artists and contemporary Indigenous culture.
Young Black and Deadly – A youth-focused initiative supporting the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media makers, artists and leaders.
Kameygal Music Studio – A creative recording and production space supporting First Nations musicians, producers and emerging talent.
Today, Gadigal Information Service remains committed to empowering First Nations communities through independent media, cultural expression and creative industries. We continue to champion self-determination by ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples remain at the forefront of telling our own stories, preserving our cultures, and shaping our futures.
We acknowledge that, as First Nations peoples, we have never ceded our sovereignty. Sovereignty was never surrendered. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
